Committee Reports

Craig Peterson/NBG liason: Newtown Experience was a success. It was estimated that over 300 attended. Every Newtown business took part, 8 realtors had open houses, 16 gardens were available to tour and there were 16 to 18 yard sales. Realtors reported having 50 to 60 people visit each open house.

Sara Hollberg/Community Issues: There was a low turnout at the Comprehensive City Plan event at Bessie Weller. Does NNA want to suggest issues to present to the committee? One suggested issue was walkability: sidewalks, repair of sidewalks and ability to get to one area of the city to the next.

Old Business:

1. NNA member choice of receiving emails and which emails they should be sent: Sara forwards emails from Historic Staunton, SDDA and the City. On others Sara asks the Board before sending. Bob Craycroft suggested just sending a link, so members could sign up to receive emails from various organizations if they wished. It was also suggested that we include an unsubscribe option with our emails.

2. Distribution of newsletters and event announcements:
In previous meetings it was discussed having a postcard mailed 3 weeks before the event, an email 1 week before the event and hard copies of the newsletters in Newtown businesses. It's a hardship for the distribution committee to take the newsletters door to door, especially in the winter months. If we did postcards we would need to put on the labels and our list would need to be in a format where we could print labels. Sara will email her Excel list to Ann Hanger and she will try to print the labels. John Jones volunteered to help put labels on.

3. Neighborhood concerns questionaire: The Board decided to not do this.

4. Newtown salutes neighborhood people: We have been doing this and all felt it was a good idea to continue. Board members can email suggestions for people to salute to Bob Craycroft. Shirley suggested Public Works for cutting the trees back on Washington St.

5. Newtown sign on the eastern boundary of Beverley St.: We could locate this close to old Stonewall Jackson school or the Trinity parking lot was suggested. Historic Staunton would need to approve the sign. It was moved and approved that a committee of Bob Craycroft, Shirley Masters and Ed Miska will look into this and report back to us.

6. Ice Cream Social: Elizabeth is OK with hosting this again and the suggested date is July 11, 1-3:30 pm. It will be open to members and their guests. Bob and Ann will try to have postcards ready. It was suggested that we invite City Council, the police department, Steve Owen and Elaine Rose.

7. Block Party is set for September 12. Trinity is OK with this date and the rain date the next day.

8. NNA bumper stickers: Craig had quotes for production of a bumper sticker: 1 color ink on white background: 125 @ $1.40 each, 250 @ $.80 each, 500 @ $.42 each; brown on cream background: 125 @ $2 each, 250 @ $1.15 each, 500 @ $.60 each. The Board voted to have 500 2 color stickers made at a cost of $300. We will include them in the newcomer baskets and sell them at events for $2 and offer at a lower price to any businesses in Newtown who wish to sell them.

New Business:

1. Nominating committee for NNA Board: Ed Pickett, John Jones and Sally Mueller(if she has time) will be our nominating committee.

2. Ed Pickett suggested that a newsletter come out in August that would include an announcement of the Block Party and that we put this newsletter on each door in Newtown. Since we are looking for new board members that might help bring some interest.

3. Steve Plumbley went to the city meeting about making the noise ordinance more specific. 65 decibels was proposed, but some people want it to be 80. There was discussion on how this would affect Newtown. Since many of our homes are very close together, most felt that 80 decibels would be excessive. Steve will attend the next noise ordinance meeting and send a letter representing NNA's opinion on this topic.

Our next meeting will be August 5, 6:30 pm at the home of Shirley Masters, 18 Church St.
