Minutes – none

Treasurer’s Report – none

Community Relations, Sara Hollberg

Sara reported the Comprehensive Plan committee meets Monday. She’ll let NNA know when there’s opportunity for input.

Many local businesses are having trouble in the economic downturn. Group discussed possible ways to get more awareness and support for shopping local.

Commercial Properties, Craig Peterson

Craig relayed the latest: Jazzy T’s has permits, work proceeding slowly, another fund-raiser coming up. Bungalow open house went very well. The owner may occupy it herself as an office.

Paul Anderson’s commercial building is in such derelict shape pieces are falling off. He turned down a written offer on the building. People are concerned it is getting to the point it could not be salvaged and that would leave an empty lot as blight to the neighborhood. Where is the City’s enforcement action? After discussion, it was decided that Craig and a couple of others (Joel? Steve? Sally?) will make an appointment with Dave Metz and ask for an explanation.

Old Business:

NNA will prepare a questionnaire to be distributed at the Winter Social. Craig will send around a draft. Questions considered are some version of the following:
1) What do you like best about Newtown neighborhood? (can be several things)
2) What are your concerns for the neighborhood?
3) Are there any improvements you would like to see?

Soup Social.
Program – Joel will ask Rick Potter to speak about his new book. Backup: Joel will show his 19-minute film on Montgomery Hall Park.
Dates – Feb. 22 preferred. Sara will ask Trinity Church the availability of the Sundays between Feb. 15 and Mar 15.

Sound System – rent one again. Try Pawn Shop. (Jammers last year had one for $50 but SO heavy)

Soup Chefs – Shirley will recruit members; Craig will ask businesses. Aim for 10 or so soups. Joel volunteered, as did Mary Beth of the café.
Recipes will be put on the web site.

Questionnaires – have them at a table. Provide pencils.
3 tables: membership, questionnaires, business table (flyers, cards of local businesses)
Craig will also ask businesses whether they want to put something on the table.

Publicity – flyer will be e-mailed with delivery to those who don’t have email. Joel will cover City Hall.

Sticker – Craig had a sample and prices. Decided to have Newtown logo (gates), brown on cream background with Newtown along the top and Staunton, Va. on the bottom. Bob will get a design to Craig. We’ll order 500 @ $0.60 and will sell them for $1.00.

New Business:

Sally Mueller suggested we look into whether a pedestrian signal could be added at the Lewis Street light. All agreed and also suggested looking at Beverley and Central and Beverley and Jefferson.

Adjourned at 8:30.
