Committee Reports

Community Issues, Sara Hollberg:
Sara went on the city tour for the comprehensive plan and found it interesting.
Lewis Creek Watershed Committee will do an event in the spring about water barrels and how to make them.

Community Property, Craig Peterson:
The Dorlinis have closed on a house by their office.

Jazzy T can't get a building permit because the city says they don't have enough parking spaces for the # of seats they are planning in the restaurant. Michael Organ offered parking in his lot, but city says the parking can't cross more than one street. Elaine Rose emailed Craig an invitation to a fundraiser and she has asked for help in who to send the invitation to in Newtown.

Craig talked to Bruce Elder about the brick sidewalks on W. Beverley. Bruce says he would help us apply for a grant that could also go toward putting electric underground and having fancy streetlights. However, this might involve a special tax assessment just for Newtown. There was a general discussion of this. Many members felt Newtown residents wouldn't go for the special tax. Bob Craycroft offered the idea of making regular sidewalks where the panels could be removed later and brick added. John Jones offered the idea of brick combined with cement sidewalks. Craig Peterson said the following amounts were quoted by the city for the 800-900 block of W. Beverley: Cement: $70,000, Stamped cement to look like brick: $140,000 and no price was quoted for real brick--but it would be much more expensive. Sara Hollberg suggested a demonstration block or part of a block to show the benefits and NNA could try to raise $ for that. Joel Hodson felt that since our property taxes are up 300% we should have improvements in Newtown proportional to this. Part of the reason for the increase in property values has been the hard work of NNA and Newtown residents.

Old Business:
Neighborhood Watch discussion with Lisa Klein--TBA because of need to elect officers at this meeting

Block Party feedback--Thanks to all who helped. Extra thanks to Ed Pickett and Brad McNeill for accepting membership renewals. It was suggested that we set up a station where neighbors can list their concerns and we can use as guidelines. Some folks felt we needed to be more inclusive. Toward this John Jones suggested putting flyers up at local businesses. Most members felt we're doing all we can to include everyone. There was a good turnout at the block party.

New Business: Craig Peterson was nominated and voted in as new president. John Jones and Sally Mueller were nominated and voted in as sharing vice president duties. Sandra McNeill remains as treasurer. Barbara Martin remains as secretary.
Other major responsibilities:
Commercial Property: Craig Peterson
Community Issues: Sara Hollberg
Crime Watch: Shirely Masters
Distribution: Ed Pickett and team
Mailings: Elisabeth Dyjak
Membership Records: Sara Hollberg
Real Estate: everyone
Webmaster/newsletter: Bob Craycroft
Special Event Coordinators:
Ice Cream Social: Elisabeth Dyjak
Christmas Walk: Ed Miska
Block Party: Shirley Masters

Newsletter: Should include recap of Block Party, Christmas Tree Walk date and invitation for people to be on the walk, neighborhood concerns questionaire, partnering with NBG for sidewalk safety? Having links to other organizations in the email newsletter was discussed. It was also discussed to give people an option of what they want to receive, as far as Newtown news, downtown news, etc. emails It was thought the links to other organizations might cover this need.

Christmas Tree Walk date is 12-20 with the pre-walk party on 12-19. We need someone willing to host the pre-party. This person needn't feel that they have to provide everything. We have a budget of $100 to help out and other board members will be there to help if desired.

Next meeting: November 12, 6:30 pm at the home of John Jones, 218 Fayette St.
