April 10, 2008
Belle Grae Inn

Elizabeth and Rod Bennett, innkeepers, graciously
treated the board to an appetizer buffet and drinks.

Members Present:
Shirley Masters, Ed Miska, Craig Peterson, Ed Pickett,
Sally Mueller, Sara Hollberg, Joel Hodson, Barbara Martin,
Steve Plumbley, Sandra McNeill, Bob Craycroft

Shirley Masters called the meeting to order at approximately 6:30 p.m.

There was a correction to the minutes of the March 5 meeting. Joel Hodson and his guest, Michael Keatts were present at that meeting. The Minutes were approved as corrected.

Treasurer's Report by Sandra McNeill: $2577.06 with 1 lifetime membership of $100 from Bob Craycroft, 10 renewals and 30 new members

Committee Reports
Community Issues, Sara Hollberg: Sara brought up the fact that there is only one council election forum planned (sponsored by the Democratic Party) and asked the board if we would be interested in offering another. No one came forth to sponsor this suggestion.

Commercial Property and liaison to NBG, Craig Peterson: CIA has asked for a police bike patrol in our neighborhood. Some of the NBG went for a neighborhood walk with one of the city officials and were pleased with the results of their presence in some of the more troubled areas of the neighborhood. May 10 there will be a kids party at Booker T. Center. April 20 at 3 p.m. there will be a get together with Dave Metz at the corner of Beverley and Jefferson.

Old Business:
Greenway Project: Joel Hodson has a copy of the 60 page report and map of the project. The board agreed to limit our involvement to a small piece in or close to Newtown.

Candidates Forum: The board decided to email the News Leader asking questions of concern for the candidates and hopefully these will appear as letters to the editor.

New Business:
Landscaping/Greenplan for W. Beverley with NBG: NBG had Bob Hodge speak about edible landscaping. They are proposing a monthly plant exchange. Ed Pickett suggested involving the Native Plant Society in order to avoid invasive plants.

Spring Cleanup: Heavy trash pickup will be the week of April 21. The items must be on the street on the 21st

Democratic sponsored candidates forum is April 28. Shirley will email the exact date and time.

Many April events:
Staunton Jewish Film Festival 11th - 17th;
Shakespeare's Birthday celebrations;
Earth Day, April 19;
Historic Garden Week in Virginia 19th - 27th;

Newsletter--we need one toward mid June to include a thank you to the Belle Grae and to remind members they offer a 10% discount.

Ice Cream Social: We will ask Elisabeth Dyjak if she will be willing to hostess again this year. We would like to invite Nick of the Split Banana.

Next meeting date and location: Monday, May 12, 6:30 tentatively at the Tea Bazaar. Sally Mueller will confirm with them and get back to us.
