Committee Reports

Community Issues: Sara Hollberg
April 21 is Earth Day Celebration sponsored by Sunspots. There will be a gathering with booths.

There will be a Gang Awareness meeting April 26, 7 pm at Bessie Weller.

Greg Jackson and someone from police department wish to do a presentation for our board and it was suggest we also include CIA. It was suggested we try to do this for the May meeting.

Commercial Property/liason to NBG: Craig Peterson

Eminent domain is now a topic of discussion more than ever. Concerns of not having eminent domain for our neighborhood are situations where there are heirs who can't decide what to do with property, property owners who are in prison for life.

For the block grant the city plans to tear down some homes or give other owners the option to rehab. Their goal is to have one block new and the one block rehabbed.

Old Business

APVA Conference--Shirley will ask Terry Graham to come to a meeting

Trash cans: Steve Plumbley reported that he contacted Tim Powell, Superintendent of Facility Services. Tim said the trash boxes cost between $500 and $550. Tim expressed concern that trash cans on upper W. Beverley would be a problem because the sidewalk is too narrow. He also said that trash cans were placed on W. Beverley at one point and they were vandalized. He did say that if we get permission to put trash cans on W. Beverley his department would have no problem with emptying them. Permission for placing the trash cans would come from Sharon Angle, head of Planning Dept. There is interest from SDDA in partnering with us on this project. There was discussion of putting at least 2 more dog poop scooper receptacles in Newtown. We have only one at Landes Park.

New Business

Spring Cleanup will be on April 22, 2-5 pm. Meeting place will be at the trolley stop at the parking lot on North Lewis across from the Howard Johnson's. We will focus on pruning and trash pickup on the path between Fillmore and Lewis Sts. Someone needs to pursue with the city where the easement is in this area. We will also focus on the block grant area. Sara will call CIA to see if they want to partner with us on this area.

Ice Cream Social--Elizabeth Dyjak is willing to hostess this again. She will pick a date & time and let us know.

Studio tour--Steve Plumbley met with Nancy Spahr who gave a list of 11 artists--painters, musicians and other types of artists who live in Newtown. We would also like to see if Huss and Dalton guitar makers would like to be included. We will aim for a late October time frame. The name, Newtown Arts Walk, was suggested. This will replace the garden walk event.

Newsletter--will come out in early June.

Ed Pickett reported that Saturday, May 5, Wilson Parking Lot, there will be a health screening sponsored by Central United Methodist Church. The church will also have a yard sale Saturday, June 2. centralumcstaunton.org

The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 8, 6:30 pm, at Ed Miska's house
