The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Bob Craycroft at 6:30 p.m.
Minutes:
Last month’s minutes were passed with minor corrections.
Treasurer’s Report:
Sandra McNeill: Current balance is $2371.42 with 3 renewals & 1 new member & 4 totes.
Committee Reports:
Commercial Property: Craig Peterson: Craig received an email that Greg Balsley is back on track with renovations on 117 Madison Pl.
Newtown Business Guild has proposed slowing traffic on W. Beverley with flags & $200 fine for speeding.
They would also like to have flowers and plantings along W. Beverley and find a project for Make a Difference Day. There is a new neighborhood group forming: Citizens Advocate for Reforming Moral and Legal Issues in Housing in Staunton. They plan to meet on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Daily Grind.
Community Issues: Sara reported to Craig that the Office on Youth would like to present a program on gangs to NNA & NBG. It was decided we would table this until next meeting after talking to Sara.
Real Estate: Several properties have either been sold recently or are under contract.
Old Business:
Steve Plumbley, Bob Craycroft and Barbara Martin volunteered to make soup for Winter Event.
Ed Pickett reported that distribution is going fine.
VA Preservation Conference was discussed. It was decided to table any decision until Shirley can talk to the representative from VA Preservation.
Community Improvement projects were discussed. Some suggestions were: planters, a sign at the east end of Newtown--possibly by the old Stonewall Jackson school. It was decided to try and find a project that would be doable by the board and another project to try to get the city to work on, such as unsafe sidewalks. The board agreed to report next month on specific sidewalk problems.
New Business:
We need to get the new name of our website out. The next newsletter will feature the new name. A newsletter will be distributed in mid February with an announcement of the winter social. It will also include news of a coming tea house at the Stonewall Jackson school, a report on the Xmas walk and the opening of 2 new businesses--Local Color and Newtown Bakery.
The next meeting will be at the home of Sandra McNeill, 115 Church St., Tuesday, February 13. |
