NNA Board Meeting Minutes

October 20th, 2005

Members Present:

The meeting was opened at 6:32PM by president Ed Miska.

The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and adopted.

Treasurers Report:
Sara reported a balance of $1818.37, with our membership now crossing the 100 household mark. The balance also includes $110 from Katharine Brown donated to NNA from the sales of her new book at the block party. Ed reported that he had sent a thank you note on behalf of NNA for Katharine's generous contribution.

Committee Reports:

Community Relations:
Sara reported on various endeavors by the Historic Staunton Foundation. These include a tip night at the Depot Grill, November 7th, a gala at the old Y lofts on November 10th, and the HSF annual meeting at the Visulite Theater on November 13th. She also reported that the Bessie Weller Parent and Teacher's organization will hold a bake sale at the Ward 1 polling place on election day, November 8th.

Ed reported that the HSF Christmas House Tour will be on December 4th, and will feature homes in the Stuart Addition.

Real Estate:
Various properties bought, sold and on the market were discussed.

Newtown Business Guild:
There was extensive discussion of the properties in the Newtown Business Guild membership area undergoing renovation. Michael reported on problems in the Callahan's Alley area that need to be addressed.
Work on the Newtown grant is progressing, with private partners planning their renovation. Craig advised the Board that renovations to the former Dunsmore Business School property should be underway by November. In an aside, Joe reported that the windows were being reinstalled at 300 Church Street.

Old Business:

Joe reported on the progress of the Candidate's Forum on November 3rd. All candidates for both local races have agreed to attend.

Ed reported that the NNA afternoon tea is set for November 13th. It will be held at Dante and David's house at 122 Madison Place, will be member's only and be an RSVP event. It will feature piano and vocals. Details to follow.

New Business:

There was extensive and lively discussion regarding City Council's vote to overturn the HPC decision regarding a parking pad and curb cut on Sherwood Ave on Gospel Hill. Craig was present at the Council meeting and gave his insights on the meeting. There was much discussion on how to address the Council vote. Sara will talk to HSF about the issue and follow up.
Joe moved to table the discussion.
There was no second.

Tesi moved and Sara seconded:
The Board authorizes the President to form a committee to address the breakdown in the Historic Preservation process regarding curb cuts.
The motion passed unanimously.

Barbara inquired about the timing of the next issue of "Newtown News". It was decided that it should publish after Thanksgiving to feature the Christmas Tree Walk and the end of year membership drive.

Ed reported his recommendations for the Christmas Tree Walk.

Joe moved and Sara seconded:
NNA will hold their annual Christmas Tree Walk on December 17th. The pre-party for Board members and participants will be at Shirley's house on December 16th.
The motion passed unanimously.

The President commended Barbara for agreeing to publish "Newtown News" and Joe for organizing the Canidate's Forum and maintaining the website.

It was decided that the next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17th at 6:30PM. It will be held at Ed Miska's house, 12 Fayette Street.

The meeting adjourned at 8:05PM.

The snack plates had been ravaged, the wine bottles were empty, and the Board wandered into the night, vocalizing harmonically in small belches. Thanks, Tesi!
