Committee Reports:
Newtown Business Guild: Craig reported on both a positive article and editorial in the News Leader concerning renovations on West Beverley Street. There was discussion about an RFP concerning the grant to improve the West Beverley Street Corridor. (You can view a PDF version of the City's RFP by clicking here).
Real Estate: Tesi reported that Pete Pederson is planning to sell all of his rental properties in our area. Much discussion followed concerning getting the word out to restoration minded buyers. The consensus was that if Pederson agreed, NNA would spread the word to prospective buyers.
Community Relations: Sara reported on the proposed Corridor Overlay District concept that has languished for a while. She stressed the need to move forward on this proposal, noting that over 1500 properties have been platted in the city this year. She opined that although it may be too late, NNA might want to endorse the establishment of the District.
A motion was made by Sara Hollberg, and seconded by David Jeffrey.
Motion: It is moved that the Newtown Neighborhood Association endorse the concept of establishing a Corridor Overlay District in the city.
The motion passed without objection.
Sara continued her report, informing the board about the progress with Logan Ward and Carter Green, representatives of HSF and HPC respectively towards establishing a kiosk in the Planning and Inspections Office. The purpose of the kiosk would be to inform residents about the responsibilities of owning property in a historic district.
The discussion shifted to the proposed joint forum on preservation guidelines. Sara said that she would check with Carter and Logan and see if they were ready to proceed with the planning. All agreed that it's been a short, busy summer.
Sara also reported on a concern about so called "liquid siding". Frank Strassler, Executive Director of the HSF is concerned about it being designated as paint, and therefore exempt from the HPC approval process. Several members testified that this would be a problem because unlike paint, it is not a reversable treatment,
New Business:
Joe reported on the results of the survey conducted at the block party. The majority of the respondants agreed with the course of the NNA board concerning preservation efforts in the district.
Craig reported on the progress of the City's case against Paul Anderson regarding the lack of maintainance on his brownstone property on West Beverley Street. The judge has given him 90 days more to comply with the City's demands. Craig informed us that our City Manager is in favor of enforcing the code strictly in this case.
Tess introduced an idea for a program or seminar. Richard Byrnes has a presentation entitled: "Why Old Houses Fall Down". The consensus was that this was a presentation worth considering for a program.
It was decided that the next meeting would be Tuesday, October 19th at 6:30 PM. Craig Peterson generously volunteered his house (703 West Beverley) for the event.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05PM, and the Board retired to the kitchen for tea, wine, pears, cheese, pretzels w/champagne mustard, and, ....well, more wine.
